Tonight, watch an Oakland ‘Top Chef’ compete on ‘Beat Bobby Flay’

That confident smile Bobby Flay wears in his TV appearances looks so glued-on, it’d take industrial-strength oven cleaner to remove it. Can Oakland’s own Nelson German be the one to do it?

Tonight, cooking fans will find out as German, a former “Top Chef” star, competes against the red-haired menace on the Food Network’s “Beat Bobby Flay”. The action starts at 9 p.m. PT on the Season 34 episode, “This Kitchen’s Crowded.”

German, who competed on Season 18 of “Top Chef,” is the chef and owner of Oakland’s Afro-Latino cocktail bar Sobre Mesa and alaMar Kitchen – or rather, alaMar Dominican Kitchen, as Nelson recently reinvented the restaurant and menu to highlight his culinary upbringing in Manhattan’s Washington Heights.

To celebrate the TV battle, alaMar Dominican Kitchen is holding a watch party tonight from 9 to 10 p.m. at 100 Grand Ave. #111, Oakland. The chef and his crew will be in attendance, with the show playing on a big-screen TV, and reservations are available on OpenTable (walk-ins are also welcome).

Nelson’s competitor in beating Bobby Flay this evening is chef Carlos Anthony, who works at Herb & Wood in San Diego, a restaurant from Brian Malarkey of “Top Chef: All-Stars.” The judging panel includes Southern chef Kardea Brown and actor Kevin Pollak.
