The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce AWD Hybrid SUV
What is a Tonale? A Tonale is a compact SUV built in Pomigliano, Italy, and is sold worldwide by Alfa Romeo. The Tonale is the first PHEV hybrid powered Alfa Romeo and is the first new model from the Italian brand in six years. The Tonale is named after the famous windy, extremely narrow, Tonale mountain pass road in Northern Italy.
Why are Alfa Romeo’s so special? There are a lot of things that make the Alfa Romeo brand special. The company builds unique vehicles, with exceptional designs and great performance, in segments where standing out is becoming more and more difficult. The Tonale Veloce hybrid SUV is a perfect example of just how impressive Alfa Romeo is.
Every 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale comes with a PHEV plug-in hybrid electric vehicle power train. It combines a 1.3L liter turbocharged 4 cylinder gas engine under the hood with a 90 kW electric motor mounted on the rear axle. Total power output measures 285 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque, which is sent through a 6 speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters into a standard AWD all wheel drive traction control system.
Alfa Romeo’s first plug-in hybrid has an all electric driving range of 33 miles with a 77 MPGe rating. The gas engine gets 29 MPG in city and highway driving. The total driving range is 360 miles. The greenhouse gas rating is an 8 and the smog rating is a 6; both out of 10. These are all good numbers for a compact crossover AWD plug-in hybrid SUV.
And how long does it take to charge the battery? The Alfa Romeo Tonale has an onboard 7.4 kW battery charger. With a 120 volt Level I charger, the battery fully recharges in about 8 hours. You can shorten the charging time down to less than 4 hours using a 240 volt Level II battery charger at home, school, or work.
